Need help with identification.
« on: May 20, 2025, 07:39:07 AM »
Purchased at show this past weekend. Very well made with quality components. Name on lock engraving partially worn off. Completely disassembled and not a mark anywhere. Nice engraving, no carving. 38” barrel .62/20

It's a nice copy of a French Type C trade gun circa early 1700's.  I think the parts for these are sold by Track of the Wolf and possibly by the Mold and Gun Shop.  I cleaned quite a few archaeologically recovered parts for this type of musket that were sent to our lab for conservation by Alan Toth, who was the State Archaeologist for Louisiana.  They were recovered from the Angola Prison Farm.

Thanks James. I found the lock on TOW and a friend found it in an older Zorn M&G flyer he has this morning. Appreciate the info!

IF the last three letters on that name are from the German language, the EUG is pronounced OYG and the shape  of the "cock" looks like it was made to be used with an external safety that was not in this lock.

The name on the lock is Maubeuge.  A French town and arsenal where Charleville muskets were made.  I would make a guess that this lock plate and other exterior parts were copied from an original, and the non-original frizzen spring covered up the final e.
Here is another found with a little time on the web.

It looks like a well put together interpretation of 1730s fusil fin with a lock that is not correct for it. Type C was what it was called before current information was available.
