Thanks for removing the trigger guard and showing us what you found!
I also noticed in your photos that the lug on the front of the guard seems to have come completely loose from the trigger guard after the pin was removed? Is that correct? If so, then we wouldn't call it "staked". Staked would mean that it was peened in such a way as to permanently connect the lug and front extension.
It's a very fascinating rifle.
