Jaeger finally finished.
« on: July 08, 2025, 12:06:29 AM »
It was probably over-ambitious to start out with a first project like this, but as I couldn't find any kits I liked, I decided to build from a plank.
While I'm moderately handy with most tools, this was definitely something else and also having limited access to real examples, it meant removing very small amounts of wood, reviewing the work, re-planning, etc. Lots of mistakes were made, some of them I managed to hide, others not so much, but I'm still very happy with the result, although some of that now, finally after a 3+ years, this is a functioning gun.

Still a few screwheads, etc to be sorted out.
Brass castings are from Ron Scott's Suhl rifle, Barrel is a 31" Rice .62 'Jaeger' barrel, lock is a Chambers Deluxe gunmakers kit and the wood plank was also sourced from Ron Scott..and also Ron's CNC'd triggers.

Ron was also always quick to answer questions, for which I can't thank him enough.

I shot it for the first time today and much to my pleasant surprise, the sights were in the ballpark, although I had forgotten my adjustable powder measure, so it was '70 grains + a tad', which made any accurate testing difficult.

I got 6 weeks to get a load sorted out for the hunting season, which should hopefully be plenty.

Hi Jakob,
For a first gun from a blank, that is very impressive.  You are right that it was an ambitious project but you did very very well.  Nice gun!

Thanks Dave. I should add that all your various tutorials were a great resource as well.

I still want to engrave the lock and barrel, but decided I'd rather take my time to develop those skills and then go back and do that later.

Wow, hard to believe it's your first blank build. And you didn't go cheap on anything.

That is very nice for a first Jaeger and I’ve enjoyed your posts over the years.  You are right that Ron Scott is a great help.  You’d enjoy  one of his classes at WKU.

Very nice rifle. I love how handy those short rifles are in the deer woods.

Hi Jakob, Thank you for sharing photos of your nice rife. I am always fascinated to see what each of the stocks I provide looks like when finished. I will look forward to seeing your pistol project develop.

You have to be proud! Nice work. IMO, accuracy is mostly in the patch and lube.

You did a very good job on this rifle. I have to commend you on your perseverance; three years is a long time to maintain focus.
Congratulations!
