New Gun Stocking Bench

Hello everyone,
As some of you may know I recently started to set up my new shop/man cave.  It has been slow going, mainly the building I am using has more issues that I initially was aware of.  Home inspections do not include out buildings.  Is green mold bad for you?? 

Anyway, add the heatwave and a gout flare up or two and it is going very slowly.  But I did finish my new gun stocking bench.  I have had the plans drawn up for a while and just now got to where I could execute it.  It has two vices, but I will probably only have both on it when I am inletting barrels.  My next three planned projects are all kits so no barrel inletting for a while.  And yes, I did use enough screws.

Looks good Cory Joe, at the present I don't have enough room for a bench like that, someday maybe. FWIW, ya can never have enough screws holding things together. Or nails as back in the day when heavy duty motorized screw guns were unavailable (at least common) and ya had to make bench's the old way hammering nails. My first bench made around 1973 has enough nails in her I think to regard it made of iron rather than wood, but it's still solid and in use, heavy as the proverbial tank.

1 by 6 so 3/4 by 5 1/2 pine..  If I still had my drawings I would share.

I have a ton of white ash slabs in my shed.  This gives me an idea.  Hopefully it isn’t too heavy to move around when made from hardwood.

There are some other neat ideas for walk around work benches if anyone wants to go search “small bench ideas” from back in 2021 that several of us showed our individual bench ideas and lots of good photos of several neat benches. Good luck in more innovations in walk around benches.

Walk-arounds are great! I've used this one for around 35 years. It's made of double 2x10 ruff sawn oak and weighs about 80 lbs. I like two vices so the stock doesn't move around on you.

That lip around the edge is a good idea to help keep stuff from rolling off

This bench is still in service. It is designed to be disassembled and be portable. I expect to bring it to the gunmakers fair at Kempton. If I can locate my plans and instructions I’ll be bringing them along. BJH

I would think using a flush mounted concrete “nuts” (similar to what is used to secure inground pool winter covers) would allow you to bolt it to the floor. And then you can simply unbolt it and the “nuts” would be flush to the concrete. Again, not in the way to cause tripping.

Thats a great idea.  Thank you.  I do hope to put in a wooden floor at some point.
