Found in a box
« on: July 08, 2025, 07:54:45 PM »
My father in law recently passed he was an avid gun collector. His daughters sold or gave away most of his guns. They had no idea what they had. I found this hardware by Joseph golcher in a box they put in the garbage. I did some research and it’s a wonderful antique lock. I really have no use for it. Any idea on value and where I could sell it so it may go to another gun collector.

Relatively common back action style locks.  Not really "valuable" but still someone somewhere might need parts.  Just my opinion but of all the lock styles I find back action such as these the least desirable.  BTW, I am probably the LEAST qualified to suggest a specific "value" so I won't go there.  Looks like maybe they were on a common double barrel shotgun.

Several pairs on ebay just FYI....crazy prices IMO.  Just remember, "asking" is not necessarily the price it will sell at.

Some back action locks are as high in quality as the bar locks and made by top makers. Most seen are those seen on old American guns are the simple ones, utility grade.

Generally you can buy the entire Antique percussion double barrel shotgun for $125 unless it’s something special

The locks shown are a right and a left.  They would be worth more if they were a matched pair, but unfortunately, the lock plates and internal mechanisms are different.  The other hardware may add some interest, if the butt plate isn't broken.

I question whether the locks are worth anything. I also have a box of miscellaneous back actions and parts I'd gladly give away. I've never found any use for them. Most were mediocre, at best, when new and I can't see anyone going to the effort to make a gun using an inferior lock. As Mr. roller has mentioned, there were very high quality back action locks. I once spent years trying to find a loose one to use on a NE target rifle I'd gotten very cheap because the lock was missing. The trigger guard and butplate might be more useful.

The best back action locks I owned were on  double barreled rifle and marked Holland and Holland.Looking back,I think they were the only back actions I ever owned.
