Installing Underlugs on a round barrel.
« on: July 12, 2025, 07:14:53 AM »
Hello,

Should I solder these or try to inlet them? Soldering seems like the right path, but I would appreciate hearing what you guys think.

Thanks!

Ben

solder them  on a round barrel. form them to fit first as the barrel likely tapers.

I wrap a piece of 180 or 220 sand paper over the barrel where the lug wil sit and run the lug back and forth until it sands down for a perfect fit on the barrel at that point. I thin the base at the same time because you don't need that much metal for a soldered on lug.

I use low temp solder paste to put them on, quick and easy and you couldn't knock one off with a hammer, (I tried).

One thing you might want to keep in mind is a front sight. How close to the front lug will it be? Will you have to secure that front lug some how when you solder the front sight on ??? Another builder told me he used a higher temp solder for the front lug, that might work but I have never done it that way. :-\

I apply a heat sink at the front lug when soldering the front sight.
Also, I have good results making my own round barrel lugs from thin brass.  Doubled where pin goes thru but single at barrel, and easily bends to fit barrel.
