The fine folks at Buck Ridge Flintlocks are coming out with an English Gentlemen's Rifle kit. The lock is a new creation from Liston Rice based on a Manton. The buttplate, trigger guard, trigger assembly, folding leaf rear sight and ramrod pipes are all made by Liston. The barrel is a Rice 31" swamped fitted with their Manton hook breech. The rifle pictured is a 45 cal and weighs 6 lbs 8 oz. It will also be available in 50 and 54 cal. This should make a dandy hunting rifle. I made the rifle below from a blank because he didn't have his carving machine up and running yet. However, I also made the master for his carving machine and the pictured rifle is a duplicate of the master. He will have this on his table at Kempton and the CLA, so if you're at either of these, stop by and take a look.

Looks great! Will this be similar to a Kibler kit in terms of the fit and finish of the pre-carved stock?

This will be more on the lines of a Chambers kit than a Kibler.

Looks great, too bad it won't be available in at least a 58, I'd love to have one in a 62 but I'd probably settle for a 58. Any idea if there is enough meat on the barrel to bore it out?

I'm not sure if he plans on installing the underrib. It is easy to solder on though.

Not enough meat for a 58. The barrel is only 3/4" at the nosecap.

Finally!A kit for an English styled rifle.I have thought about cobbling one together with a 1"x 34 58 caliber barrel and my version of a Ketland lock.My choice in 58 is because I still have a round ball mould I bought from E.M.Farris in 1953 for less than $5 new and it is a Lyman.
I hope you get many orders for this one.

Very nice. I ask about a lefty version as I built this "youth version" for smaller people. I have two left handed grandkids is why I ask.

The youth version I build is similar to the English, but not HC. I did make it a hook breech for easier cleaning and the barrel length is 30" with a LOP of 12.5" (IIRC). My version is also .45cal.

If you have time, can you post a pic of the buttplate?

I’m assuming the stock is not pre-inletted. Also assuming it doesn’t have a cast off.

If that’s the case can it be acquired without the lock?

Don't know why I didn't show a picture of the buttplate on the finished rifle. I no longer have the rifle, but here are some pics of the buttplate after filing of the rough casting. As you can see, there is a lug for capturing the tang by either drilling for a pin or filing a notch in it and securing it with a nail or woodscrew. I opted for the woodscrew.

His plan is to have the stock pre-inletted. I would imagine that it could be had without inletting. There is no cast off. All parts will be available to purchase separately.

For a left hand version I would think the L&R small Manton would be a good choice.A 3/4" atf barrel in 58 caliber would have a barrel has thickness of about .085.Hold it up to a strong light to make sure the load was seated.

. A 54 caliber version in my experience is a fine choice and with a tight ball and 120 grains of 3fg Swiss it is a real game getter. Gun maker Tom Nixin proved that more than once with his Hawken style caplock.

You're sort of reading my mind. Except I would go with a .45 Cal only because of limited recoil. Of course, a light load can be used on a .50 or .54 as well. The .45 cal on my rifle is a real joy to shoot.

The L&R Manton is what's on my "red" rifle in the pic. The difference between the Manton and the lock on the OP pic is the hammer on the OP's has a very elegant sweeping hammer which the flint screw comes in behind where the lower jaw is vs the "more standard" style of hammers. I'd really like to have the hammer from the OP's....but going with a lefty rules that out.

I forgot to mention that the stop for the hammer is on the fence, not on the bolster.

I was curious about the Rice barrel so I went on their website. Rice shows the English Sporting Rifle 31", breech 1.115". muzzle .960, and swamped in the middle. https://ricebarrels.com/product/english-sporting-rifle-31-1-66-square-or-radius-rifling-with-flared-plug/

They do show calibers available at .50, .54, and .58. However, they do not show the barrel in a .45 caliber.

I also searched for a "Manton Hook Breech" just for my own education, but could not find any examples. I fabricated my last rifle's hook breech so I was curious if there were any differences.

I'm not sure which barrel he used. I don't see a 1" breech with a 3/4" waist listed. I'll call Jason when he gets back from Kempton. It's got my curiosity up. As far as the hook breech, here's a link to his site. This is what I used.

First, thanks for the link to the Manton breech plug. The description isn't clear that this consistent of two separate parts (Tang and separate Patent breech?). On the OP build I don't see a definitive "break" for a Manton style BP. Could be there and I just don't see it.

As for the barrel, again....looking at the Rice site the only other barrel I found that's 31" was a Jaeger Barrel--description is for TOTW--However the measurements are close, but the center is not .375. Then again, this barrel is offered from calibers of .45 all the way up to .62.

The first pic is the measurements of the barrel Rice list as "English Sporting".
