There is indeed an iron tip on the buttplate.  What might the significance of that be even on a wreck such as this?

Yes, If you have access to the reference I gave to page 286 in the gray Maryland book, Christian Hawken rifle pictured has an iron tip butt plate. The cheek carving and wrist carving are very similar as well. The patch box has a Q type finial to.
