Soddy Daisy Buttplate Assembly
« on: July 28, 2025, 03:33:36 PM »
Here's how I do it in what I call my build in place method meaning the two pieces and the toe are built and assembled at the same time while the stock is still in the blank state and strong enough to provide a forming tool. The build is fast efficient and permanent never meant to be removed.

I use blue painters tape to get a pattern from my Jack Duprey rifle.

Peel off the tape and apply to my stock material where it will remain as a guide and protection.

Install with rivets. I use copper iron or brass on occasion but only one screw on the bottom of the butt because your momma did it that way.

Trigger pull is locked in on this one at 13 1/2 and the butt is almost ready for final shaping once the trigger guard is installed.

That's an awesome technique. Thanks for sharing, Daniel. How thick is your sheet metal?  And it looks like you do the butt before the heel and return. Is there a special technique for doing the heel/return? Do you have another tape template that's placed on the wood and used as an inlet guide? Then form your metal to that inlet?

Material is 16 ga steel for this build. I used to over do it with heavier material but it's really not necessary. Yes the butt was done first and even with the double curve, one top to bottom and one side to side, the bend length is great enough you can get away with using the stock blank as the forming tool.

The heel is entirely different because it's so short and takes a lot of coaxing with a hammer vise and anvil. Then I inlet  and match it to the already installed butt.
