With respect to my mentor Jack Duprey. Come see me at the CLA show. Rice 46 inch 36 cal squirrel profile barrel, Ross Dillion triggers, Chambers Late Ketland Lock, Allen Martin Maple blank, David Rase barrel inlet and ramrod hole drill Blacksmith and general gun stocking by myself.

My work is very close to my mentor Jack Duprey in fact my swamped 46 inch gun ended up being 1oz lighter than the bench copy with a 39 7/8 straighten up barrel that he used. Let me know if you have questions.

The wood finish is beautiful, I really like your metal finish!
I cant bring myself to do anymore than this on my new builds.

Thanks everyone I just realized I forgot to mention this rifle only weighs 6 pounds 8 ounces. That's with a 46 inch swamped barrel.

Very impressive work, Dan.

On the negative side, I do not "see or perhaps understand" the aging of the metal parts, when it is obviously a new rifle & finished so beautifully.

The main reason I do it is because it appeals to me. Another reason is I'm bench copying a rifle by Jack Duprey. It's really popular right now but obviously not for everyone.

I don't understand why I like it, but I like it. For me a rifle tastefully "aged" has more warmth and appeal than a shiny new unblemished one. I know the new wood and aged metal don't relate, but it'll get dinged with use and only look better. We all perceive art differently, which is as it should be.

A few years ago I had a "Soddy" created by Don Bruton. I absolutely love everything about them. That year I made a bucket list punch by going to the CLA show. While in Kentucky I was invited by the curator of the Soddy-Daisy museum to come and see some of their originals and was invited to a private home to see a large collection of them including a 'Soddy" chunk gun. I know we aren't discussing it but I have Don patina all the guns he has made for me some to extreme.
Your Soddy is a perfect example that would put a smile on Jack's face. Well done my friend, well done.

Thank you Don! As a mentor you have taught me much of what I know and use today. Your constant encouragement and support through the years has been extremely valuable not to mention our kinship to the real school! Next Soddy up has already started from a rare piece of curly ash.

This rifle sold quickly at the CLA show. One of the things that surprised me were the people that knew me and would walk up and say " You're Daniel Coats aren't you? You're the guy with all those Soddy Daisy posts and builds em huh?" I was humbled at the recognition and had great fun talking with people.

My biggest surprise was when Frank House talked to me about my rifles. Turns out Frank follows my posts and we had a good talk about the diamond butt plate shape and how I carried the diamond profile forward through the forearm. There just aren't many examples to go from he commented. What surprised me the most was that two times during our conversation he said "you do really good work!" Not what I expected to say the least.

This rifle is pretty awesome when you see it in person, it has charm and character both, and it was very unique and impressive, one of the highlights of the whole CLA show, especially because of the way it was crafted with the diamond shaped the whole way through the stock. Pretty amazing!! Lots of skills and talents right there!!
