Forearm shape
« on: August 09, 2025, 11:23:53 PM »
It’s been awhile since I last posted/replied to anything, so here goes….
I started a rifle awhile ago but work and family got in the way, but have finally got working on this a week or two ago.   In Shumway’s Longrifle Articles volume II, page 112 is a supposed (middle/southwestern portion) Virginia rifle of unknown maker that interested me, the hard part about building for me is no easy access so I usually build from pics the best I can.  This rifle has no close up of the forearm, so was wondering if someone who knows southern made rifles if there was a certain profile used by these long gone gentleman?  Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated, part of me says just do what I want/thinks looks good because this is no exact copy, but want to do my part to be as historically accurate as possible for making such a rifle.

After posting I realized some may not have that book.  This is not a mountain rifle, it’s using a large round faced lock and the butt is a cross between a shot gun and musket where the grip runs back into the stock.

Hi Bob,
If I'm not mistaken, that's the original that Kibler's "woodsrunner" kit is related to. (Could say that original "influenced" Jim's work. He mentions that here in regard to a custom build of similar style: https://www.jimkibler.net/rifle-10.html.)

Jim Parker (Bama) posted some photos of the original here, along with some photos of his version. I don't know that they offer photos of what you need, but there's a lot of good info there.

Thanks whetrock, you are correct!  Either I forgot Kibler was using that rifle (for his woodsrunner) or I never saw the posts, like I said, I’ve been gone for awhile.  Those pics will help a lot!  Between the pics and how Kibler is selling his kits, really helps with the little detaills.  Thank you so much.
