New method for removing excess finish
« on: August 10, 2025, 12:13:03 AM »
Our own Maria Gray demonstrates her latest method for removing excess finish from along the surface of her latest work. Kentucky sour mash is good for all kinda things!

Man this AI is getting out of hand. For a minute there I was believing that Wayne Estes would actually condone the treatment of a Buffalo Trace product in such a manner.

Aside from the alcohol abuse, is Maria old enough to be handling Bourbon?

Jokes aside, that's a clever way to remove finish.
What finish was she using that could be cut with that alcohol? Any others on here use a similar technique?
Is she using it with a piece of steel wool or Scotch Brite? Can't quite tell from the photo.

If the finish is shellac, alcohol will dissolve it.

Alcohol from Home Depot would work, and wouldn't waste the bourbon.

I was using bourbon to treat chigger bites after the BBQ. Works both as internal and external medicine!  ;D

bourbon for chigger bites?!  I'll have to remember that line next time I bring home a fresh bottle.

Have no idea if it'll remedy the chigger bites, but after a couple treatments I probably wont care.  It surely IS medicinal!

Anything called BUFFALO TRACE sounds like a finish remover to me.
Now, if it was called BOMORE, then that is a beverage to be enjoyed.

Hi,
Thank you Wayne for suggesting this to Maria.  It was a memorable moment for her for sure.  The finish is Sutherland Welles polymerized tung oil but the bourbon would soften it a little although it mainly lubricates the Scotch Bright pad and perhaps Maria as well. She is 21 you know.  So Wayne, you wrote she can handle bourbon better than you.  Did she handle some bourbon at your cookout and drank the boys under the table? ;D

Wayne, Taylor found a bottle of the same Bourbon you "tested" on him, but at the local store. IIRC it was about $154.00, can. It was a fine "sipping" beverage.
Raring to get back to the lake as there is a fine bottle of Bomore waiting for me there.

Had some pretty potent but nasty moon shine back in the day. Best parts degreaser I'd seen, seems perfect for that job too, if it wouldn't dissolve the wood too ;)

I noticed this when I was walking by.  From a distance, I thought she just kept some kind of stock finish in a big bottle.  Then I smelled the bourbon.  Kind of startled me, but I figured she knew what she was doing!
