Jagdtasche experiment #1
« on: August 16, 2025, 09:21:04 PM »
So, I need a bag to accompany my new Jaeger, so I took a leaf out of Dennis Daiggers book and made one heavily inspired on this:
https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=79658.0
(In factm I contacted Dennis back when he posted this and he graciously shared his plans).

It's my first real leather project, so lots of lessons learned, but moderately happy with how it turned out.
I thought the plans I got looked too big for what I needed, so I scaled it down a bit and it's only *just* big enough. 10% bigger would have been ideal.
The dying process turned out to be a bit of a disaster and I could not get an even colour at all. I had tested it before hand and saw some variation, but not as much as when I had to do it for real.
Next time I also want much thinner leather for the trim, etc.
It'll work for this seasons hunting, but I will most likely do a new one over the winter

That is some very impressive work, I would not have guessed it to be your first major leather project. I suspect the uneveness in the color is because you didn't use a deglazer prior to dye? I really like how your color turned out, gives it a lot of worn in charm that'll only get cooler looking with use. Can't wait to see your next bag!

Thanks!
I only learned about leather surface prep *afterwards* :).
What I really like, is the small amount of tools/space needed.
Apart from cutting the leather, I just got a piece of 2x12 on my lap, with a punching block and I can easily sit and watch TV, etc while working. I also tend to get sent out of town a lot for work over the summer and this is ideal for bringing with you.

Jakob,
Your bag looks great. Leather work is relaxing and the simplicity of minimal tool and setup need is wonderful. Is the strap Kerry Maserik’s work? Looks like it might be wool.

No, this is actual commercial hemp herringbone webbing. I bought 2 different widths for making a temporary rifle sling (I really want a proper woven one from Kerry, but funds are short at the moment), but stupidly ordered without measuring the actual sling on the gun, so this 1.5" webbing was surplus. To be honest, I was kinda mad after the dyeing process, so changed plans from a leather strap to this, just to get it 'done' but it actually works really well.

I'll most likely add some attachments for horn/short starter/powder measure, while not necessarily historically correct, this is meant as a practical shooting bag.
