Patchbox hinge forming block
« on: August 17, 2025, 07:15:37 PM »
In the metal working tutorials, page 2, is a forming block for forming hinge barrels that Acer made from an original post by Mark Eliot. I would like to make one myself, but there are no dimensions given. Is the raised portion that the hinge is formed over 1/16" x 1/16"  to allow for a wire pin of that size ?  and is the top rounded  ? It does now show that detail in the photo. Can the original post by Mark be transferred to the new Tutorial board ? I have used Acer's posts to make a couple of nosecaps and really appreciate these boards.  Thank you, Roland

Here's a link to Acer's tutorial.... https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=22371.0

No, it's a little larger.  In the tutorial Acre wrote "The block has a a round top tab, about .08. The hole closes down as you work the hinge, it works down to about a 1/16" pin hole."

I think the block is flat.  In one of the pictures you can seem the swirl marks where he milled it flat.  You can put a slight bend or dome to the hinge and door, but Acer cautions to not bend it too much or the door won't open.  The link in Acer's tutorial to Gary Brumfield's website shows how to make a curved hinge that will open.

Mark's tutorial was on the old ALR board from years ago.  We have a link to the old Board on the Home page called ALR Archives.  Unfortunately the link is broken, so we can't access the Archive right now, but we're trying to find a programming whiz that can fix it.

I sure miss Tom and Gary, but it's good to know they're still helping us!

I can sell you one already made for $70 shipped to your door. I had these made for my students in my rifle building classes. I have a few left if you want one.

I have one of Bama's tools, bought at the CLA a few years ago. It's a top-notch product.

Roland and any others , the tool that Bama sells is priceless. I just made hinges for a " metal /iron" patch box not brass. The " tube " formed using this tool is for .063 wire. I highly recommend it. The first tube I thought the diameter wasn't right so I made one with thicker materal, this one I like. The smaller diameter tube (.040, the thicker tube I used .050).

while your at it make a larger tool, for your side opening Bucks Co. patch box

It's a good tool. It forms a nice tube.

That said, I think it's helpful to look through reference books that have good photos and pay attention to the hinge tubes. There are some differences in how they were made. So, I don't think a bending jig like this is always the best tool for the job, at least not if the builder is trying to reproduce the look of some particular originals. Some antiques have a hinge tube like what this tool will produce, with a tight bend from the flat to the tube. But some others were quite obviously made in a more relaxed manner. I've experimented some with how to make different styles of tubes, and it seems pretty obvious that some were just formed with a vise, anvil, and perhaps a wide punch, and no special bending jig.

So, I like this tool, but I wouldn't necessarily use it on everything. People's philosophies on this kind of thing differ a lot. Some guys like to try to "improve" the originals, so they like the idea of improving the hinge, etc. I generally prefer the idea of trying to mimic the techniques used by a particular old builder or school. It's just a personal preference. Neither philosophy is right or wrong, but they can lead a builder to produce very different results.  ---Just some thoughts.
