Finished my 100th Powder Horn!
« on: September 01, 2025, 05:49:33 AM »
I want to do a nice 100th Powder Horn. I chose a relatively large right side carry and making it a lobed one. I cut a disc from a flattened piece of horn and inlet it into the base plug, with a little engraving work.
For this horn I am envisioning a hunter scene made in a woodcut style, so my border bands and and frames will need to compatible in style, which I tried to do with the scrolls on the butt medallion. They will come next.
I hope it comes out well.

Congratulations on your 100th horn!  I bet it’s going to be a beautiful one.

Bob, As usual, that horn is going to be a work of art.
Doing horns as beautiful and striking as you do, the 100th is a true milestone.  I shudder to think what #1,000 will look like.
Keep it up my friend,
John (Bigsmoke)
PS:  I never kept count of the horns I produced, but I would imagine my #100 would have rolled off the workbench somewhere around March or April of 1984.  But there is a huge difference between your horns and mine.

Bob: there is no doubt this will be a fantastic horn. The style is one anyone would love to have. I hope whoever ends up with it carries it and it doesn't spend it's life on a display shelf.

Thanks for your support and kind thoughts!
I got back to it yesterday and today, working on the upper and lower border bands. I often change my designs and here’s an example of a change made mid-stream. It seemed doing that scroll work around the lobe holes was just too much scrolling…

I think I am about ready to work on the hunting scene(s). My idea is of a 17th century wood-cut type image. Not sure if it will be on two panels or just one wrap-around scene… 🤔

It's a great looking horn anxiously awaiting the hunting scene Bob. I like the lobed horns.

I have been pondering on a couple of lay-outs for the illustration on this horn; two bordered panels or try a cylinder image that wraps around the horn. I’ve never done the latter so it will be a first. It will be a hunting scene with a buck and the familiar hunting dog and trees and stuff. I think it will work. Here’s my final sketches of the layout. I will start with the Hunter first.

Bob,
you've really nailed the hunter, waiting foe the hound and buck. It's going to be a masterpiece. Maybe needs to find a place in the Michigan woods. ;)

Thanks for the encouraging words! I worked on the stag and the hound, with a bit of vegetation. Wore out my pen nib!
Some more work to do on the foreground and then next will be the background to pull it all together, though I haven’t yet decided on what it will be.

Hi all,
Last night I finished the horn. I am happy with how it turned out.
Often, when I finish something and have a careful look at it I see lots of things that I would have done differently. I am happy that this isn’t the case with Number 100. All in all, I think this one is my finest horn to date.
I plan to da a video of it because it’s hard to capture the motion of the scene as it wraps around the horn, but hopefully these few photos will give a pretty good idea of the decorations.
Thanks for looking and comments, criticisms and suggestions are very welcome and appreciated.
And thanks to those who have been following along this artistic journey with me. It ended up in a nice place.
Deo Gratias,
-Bob

Bob, you've outdone yourself. I don't know how you could fault anything about that horn. Bravo Zulu Sir.
