Hot Off The Bench Soddy Daisy In Curly Ash

Just finished this one up this morning. Chambers Late Ketland lock, Ross Dillon Triggers, Rice 3/4 inch 36 caliber barrel 42 inches, absolutely stunning piece of curly ash hard as woodpecker lips inlet for barrel and drilled for 5/16 ramrod by David Rase. 13 1/8 pull total weight 6 pounds 11 ounces.  Butt plate trigger guard toe plate copper pipes rear sight hand made for this project. Everything else altered and aged especially for this reason. Best compliment ever this morning when a guest stopped by my shop and asked if I was restoring an original rifle.

I forgot to include a picture  of the distinctive Soddy Daisy diamond shaped butt. It just ain't a Soddy without it and you can't buy em.

Thank you Mike I remember when you made the trip to the museum. I live close enough to make the trip and will one day. I mentioned Jack Duprey but my other mentor we both know well is Don Bruton. Don and I talk fairly often about gun building and I consider him a good friend. He's taught me a great deal.

You mean the trigger guard bar that functions as a long rivet on both ends. I saw it once on an original rifle but can't remember where off hand. It's more common as a rivet on just one end and flattened on the other. I've used it a few times as a double I think it adds interest. On a tiny wrist like this one even 1/4 inch round rod looks huge!

On a side note it's not a time saver or common so I probably won't use it much. Still kinda neat though.

Ace hardware has copper rivets in their specially screws section but they're really short. 1/8 inch copper rod used for brazing is available in lengths about a foot long or longer. Welding supplies or buy online at Amazon.

Two applications of aquifortis blushed each time rubbed back. One coat of Homer Dangler's orange toner rubbed back. One coat of India ink rubbed back. One coat of Homer Dangler's Dark brown rubbed back. One coat of clear Shellac rubbed back. 4 coats of Kibler's stock finish rubbed back between coats. Lemon oil furniture polish with a soft cloth rub the heck out of it. Twist of lime in your favorite beverage because your momma did it that way.

You did a nice job.

I was going to build one in All copper trim one time. Had most of it made up & then
backed out. I kept envisioning it all turning green inside & it really bothered me. I had
allot of scrap brass & copper from my business & easily obtainable, but that vision of
green corrosion kept coming to my mind.

I've not seen green corrosion on a gun. I have however seen it on leather cartridge belts.
