Paper Cartidges for shot?
« on: September 26, 2025, 10:08:21 PM »
I've always liked the idea of fowlers simply because one can carry both shot and ball, but carrying shot is odd for me, as I have yet to find a good container for shot that does not take up room in the bag. Is there anyone her who has experimented with just taking a regular shot charge you would use, and wrapping it in paper like a paper cartridge? If so, how well did it work for you? Did you have any problems doing so? I think it would be handy to carry a couple cartridges of ball and shot in my bag to simplify the loading/shooting process in the field.

I've done exactly that, even had the wads and cards in the cartridge. I wrote roman numerals on the outside to denote what size shot was in them.

In the 1800's, the British firm of ELY, used to sell pre-made shot ctgs for use in muzzleloaders. If you used paper-bag material, that should be stiff enough to hold the shot, and/or wads. I think they might not work for both shot and powder, but that's all part of experimenting/testing. You could glue the folded ends, or not, but treat them like a paper ctg. with powder and ball, shoving a wad down, tearing off one end and pouring the shot out of the ctg. or be totally contained.

Was thinking of loading them how I already load shot, which is powder, paper wad, shot, paper wad. Maybe a wad op paper below the shot in the cartridge, and load it as one unit? I live in quail country, where fast reloads seem like they'd be beneficial, though I have yet to hunt upland with a muzzleloader. I plan to try all this this weekend.

I use a small flask (Flash-HS from Track) and it flows 7.5 and smaller shot just fine. A 60gr spout gives about 10 loads at about 7/8oz.

I have used post it notes to make them , I wrap them around the correct size dowel and add a hard card on the bottom add shot then a thin over shot card on top and fold in both ends.
