snaphaunce blunderbuss finished
« on: September 28, 2025, 02:59:43 PM »
Hello,

I finally found another beautiful walnut plank.
I started by making a blunderbuss.
Walnut isn't easy to work with; there are chunks that splinter easily,
so be careful.

Adrie,
How long is that lock from end to end? Your work is so good that sometimes I forget that you are making miniatures!

Hello,
This time I bought a piece of patina metal.
I heated it, turned it over, ground it, and filed it.

When I was inserting the buttplate, a piece of wood broke off,i was able to widen the front a bit, but I'd prefer it narrower.
I installed the lock today.

I have two nice examples, one from Ed Wenger and one from Flatsguide
Now I'll choose.

Hi,

I've decided to make the straight shell. I find the round one quite unusual, but it's a mistake, and I can't fix it.
A bearing in my lathe started making noise. I replaced two of them, and now it's running smoothly again, so I can continue.

With all the miniatures you do Adrie, have you tried Cuban mahogany as a substitute for walnut?  I did some miniature furniture (when a customer pays you that much, it seems disrespectful to call it "doll house furniture") and found Cuban mahogany looked very much like a scaled-down walnut.  As an added bonus it carved very nicely.

It can be hard to source (on both CITES Appendix II and the IUCN Red List IIRC), but I've been able to source small quantities from Florida.

Lovely work Adrie! Making those miniature parts is no easy task, but you make it look easy.

Hello,

A while ago I bought a silver plaque.
I wanted to buy a new one, but the price went up so much, so I melted down some old coins.
I was looking for a plaque to engrave the side plate. I found one with a drum
bow and arrow and a cannon barrel. When I finished, I realized it wasn't right.
The lock is from around 1730, so not the Civil War.
So I filed it down and made a different plaque.
I'll continue with the rest.

Hello,

The trigger is in place, as is the trigger guard.
Now for the locking bolt, tang bolt, pins, and ramrod.
Engraving is a problem; I can never decide what I want on it.

Yes! What Daryl said it is “Just amazing”. Adrie, what is the size of the smallest screw in the lock you made?

Cheers Richard

Nice Adrie! It’s fun making those small items…except after you drop one, and the hunt for it last too long, then you have to make another.
