Hawken breech plugs
« on: October 09, 2025, 10:44:46 PM »
Production of Hawken breech plugs has begun.  No castings here!  Machined from barstock on a state of the art mill / turn CNC machine in one operation.

Simply amazing how good they look coming off the cnc.  I remember a friend of mine working for lots of hours to clean up castings, that didn’t include threading and then drilling the flash hole.

We sell all of our replacement parts individually, so they will be available.  They might be sold as a set with the standing breech.  This is threaded 3/4 - 16 for the plug and 1/4 - 28 for the nipple.  Thanks!

Thank you Curtis.  We put a lot into each part we make.  It's nice when people understand and appreciate this.

The entire design is impressing me more and more.  On the hooked breach of the one you made, how much work is it to get such a fine fit between the barrel and the tang recepticle?  Will precise filing that interface be required to get such a good fit with an almost imperceptible line? I want mine to look this good!

No fitting work on the customer's part will be required with the plug / standing breech assembly.  It will be fit up when you receive it and look like the finished example.  Thanks!

wuuuut?!  No hours of hand fitting, only to take too much off in the wrong place and being forced to buy a new ( sometimes unavailable) set to start over?  Niiiiice!!

It will be interesting to see the demand for these, above kit demand.  Could almost be a stand-alone business?  Well, for a couple months anyways.

nicely done, Mr. Kibler!

Thanks.  Although we'll sell them to anyone who wants them, the custom gun market is quite small compared to the kit market.

Vert clean looking.  It would be interesting to see the firing chamber end so we will know what to expect as far as cleaning it.

Regards.

Jim,
Can you comment on how the nipple hole is connected to the main chamber? For example, is it drilled from the opposite side and then plugged?
Thanks.

That is a good looking part, scallops that fine will sand out quickly and easily for finishing.  Toolpaths on that are really clean.  Not easy to do that close to the chuck/collet.

What specific machine are you running that on Jim?

I think this is pretty much standard on this type of Hawken styled plug.  About the only other option is to chamber it deeper and then drill a cross hole and plug as suggested.
