Hawken kit patchbox
« on: October 14, 2025, 01:20:55 AM »
I've been working on the Hawken kit patchbox production process.  Here is the start...  Sorry about the angle of the photos.  Not sure why it did this.

It looks more decorative than I imagined it would look , but I am not a Hawken guy. Will it have any engraving in the lid?

An original my version was based off of.  This is made from sheet steel.  Won’t be any engraving right now as I need to work on the process more.

While I don't like patch-boxes on Hawken rifles, this one is amazing if a mite LARGE! imo.

Thanks Daryl.  As to the size, trust me…  I’d have thought you and others would have figured this bit out by now😉

You must not have any good reference material or books on the subject matter.

I always liked this patchbox design.  Good choice for inspiration.  There were a lot of "non mountain" Hawken's.  Glad to see you chose the route you took on this rifle.  Could be a Hawken revival coming to a range near you in the near future.

When you get it finalized I want to buy one I have a scratch built Hawken in the works and was just thinking I needed a patch box (not a cap box) but making it is too much work if I can buy a good one.
I like your Hawken a lot. I was just at the Firearms Museum in Cody and looked at the Johnson Hawken again. Like the late Bridger its a club. Thankful yours is J&S. I often wonder if either of these later rifles were actually made by Sam. Having done some horse riding and packing in the past I KNOW they got heavier for a durability factor. Horses are hard on firearms. But I just don’t care for these later “wagon train guide/army scout” era S. Hawkens.

Thanks for all you have done. Really.

Good choice Jim. That will be a very nice option for the rifle. I suspect some of those might get purchased for iron mounted flint rifles if available as part.

Thanks guys.  I really do appreciate the positive feedback.   To say there are entrenched ideas relating to Hawken rifles is an understatement.  My view on our Hawken kit design was that adjustments could be made to make it something better in the end.  Some understood and trusted me and some didn't.  To see it come together and have support means a lot.

I was going to make myself a patchbox just like that for my Hawken build.... This will be hard for me to avoid buying instead of making.

Looks great!!
