Oops!
« on: October 17, 2025, 01:00:08 AM »
I am reworking a brass mounted pistol I did three years ago. Removing lots of wood.
I thought I would inlet a nice Thumb Piece on it.
Ooops!
I had thought the inlay was brass until after I epoxied it in and started to polish it. It kinda looks like German Silver to me (from MBS years ago) 🫣
Se la vie.

I think it's fine.  Many build a rifle in brass but inlet a coin silver thumbpc??
I don't know if that's legal or not, but I have seen it more than a few times?

German silver, ie: nickle?  When you noted the mistake, I thought, yeah, that would have looking better turned the other way around. I did not "see" your complaint. IT happens.

I polished a whole pistol triggergaurd once before I realized it was silver and not brass.  In my defense the sun was in my eyes.

If you want to, you could heat it up to between 200*- 250* the epoxy might soften up enough to be able to remove it, I done that a few times already. Especially on star inlays on the cheekpiece where those points wanted to stick out as I tightened it up, I had to remove it to spring in those points a little more for a more satisfactory result.

Nothin’  wrong with that.  Looks good……adds character to the piece.

It is only a mistake if you call it "German silver".  If you call it "paktong", well. . . the Chinese were trading it to Europe from 1600.
