This nice doe walked out of the thick brush yesterday afternoon during Minnesota’s early antlerless season. FCI “C” wt .52 caliber, Chambers Early Ketland lock, .509” ball, .018” patch, Tracks mink oil lube, 70 gr GOEX 2f. 60 yard shot.

She was a hefty old doe. We hung her on the scale this morning and she weighed right at 152 lbs. field dressed. There was about 1-1/2” of fat on her ribs and back.

OH - she'll be GREAT eating. Shot a WT buck with 1 1/2" of fat on the top of his butt - tremendous eating, like prime rib.

Same with cow moose or elk.
We have a special draw seasons for cows or does as well. I used to take part in those, rather than shooting a big bull.
I've always been interested in a full 22 cu. foot freezer by the end of fall. Had 2 young bellies to fill besides my wife and I.
Younger daughter used to get downright hyper when eating deer meat. That was a mite strange. Those were muleys.

Hunting by myself with my flintlock is much more satisfying to me than standing at the end of a corn field or willow patch waiting for a deer to come running out at full speed ahead of a bunch of drivers. Moments before this doe WALKED out in front of me, I heard about 10 or 15 rapidly fired shots from the section of land east of me. This doe just perked up her ears when she heard the shots, then went back to munching on the clover she was standing in. I’d rather take my time and make the one shot count….and if I miss, there are no witnesses.
