Possible Remington?
« on: November 28, 2025, 05:51:21 PM »
This was in a group of three guns that where acquired that the original owner said where Remingtons.  Both of the others are marked E. Remington but this one has no markings.  Help in identifying. It does have the double cheek piece and the trigger guard looks to be exactly as a known Remington pictured in a book I have.
Any info appreciated.

Remington did make guns, but mostly made barrels. Guns marked anywhere else on them might be Remington made, but guns marked with a Remington stamp under the barrel probably just has a Remington barrel on it.

Agreed. Remington supplied a lot of barrels for the gun trade, and they are especially common on New  York rifles.

The first complete guns made by Remington were the last contract for the Jenks Navy carbine, in 1847. Prior to that they were "parts suppliers", primarily barrels of both iron and steel. They probably were the first large manufacturer of steel barrels for the trade and these are very common from about 1850 on. Their first handgun was the Remington Beals revolver. The advertising tagline "America's First Gunmaker" is fallacious...Colt is older and I think S&W is as well.
