Trying to figure out which barrel to use
« on: January 13, 2026, 07:40:36 PM »
I have two barrels for a Hawken build and will probably sell one. I'm also considering a third option by ordering a custom Rice.

Both 54 cal

Green mountain, 1x36
Goodoien, 1x35, premium hand lapped

Both barrels look great. I bet you can guess which bore looks smoother! Land/groove configuration look very similar. I think they're both 8 groove. The green mountain might have slightly narrower and shorter lands but us hard to tell.

Which one would you keep and why?

I've used quite a few Green Mountain barrels but only one Goodoien.
I really liked the ease of working up loads in the G.M. barrels and their accuracy. The G barrel was wonderfully accurate and actually easy to load with bore size and even larger balls. Mind you it was only a .40 cal.
I would chose the Goodoien barrel for this rifle, especially if you will be using it as a rendezvous rifle. If you are going to sell this rifle, I'd put the G.M. barrel on it.

Really hard to beat a GMT barrel. The Goodoien barrel would be an excellent choice if you plan on mostly shooting off a rest. If you are planning on a rifle for hunting and Rendezvous I will have to disagree with Daryl on this one, I would go with the GMT barrel. Almost all shooting at Rendezvous is done offhand. The difference in accuracy will only be realized between the two barrels when shooting off a bench. The Rice barrel may not be any better than what you already have.
You would realize more money out of the Goodoien barrel.

Thanks, guys. This will be a personal gun for hunting in the mountains, so shooting positions will vary as you'd expect and unless there is generally a big difference in accuracy between the two mfg, I doubt I could shoot the difference between the two in the field. I'm not even sure I could from a bench unless they're a 2 moa difference.

I want to go with the goodoien, just because it's so shiny inside and it has a bit of "collector's" value. But, function is 100% where my efforts are going with this gun.

The only difference I think I'd probably realize in going with the goodoien is easier cleaning. Going with the GM I'd have more money for powder and practice:)

I'd go with the Goodoien, depending on barrel profiles matching the project.  I've built a few rifles where I kinda wished after the fact that I'd used a better barrel.  If you go with the Goodoien, you'll never have to wonder.

This is one of the things I thought of.... But even the best mfgs have the ability to accidentally turn out a dud.... Although far less likely to happen

Build two rifles and keep the one that you like the best.  😁
