Lehigh Schimmel By Daniel Coats
« on: January 13, 2026, 09:31:34 PM »
Just finished this up using my original gun for inspiration with a sprinkle of Allen Martin. Rice Southern Classic.50 44 inches long, modified Chambers Golden Age lock, stock from a blank scraped and everything else made by me. Special aged finish with orange peal look, aged metal.  First picture with the original rifle.

That's a great looking rifle but to be honest the lack of trigger guard would make me nervous.

Well I shot it today without incident but there is a historical precedent for it in the original rifle. Like you though it feels like it should have a guard which is modern thinking no doubt. I have a guard hand scraped to go with it and on the way to Alabama in the morning.

Daniel: as you know I am a huge fan of rifles that have character and a heavy dose of patina. Yours is absolutely perfect, we must be brothers from different mothers.

My old shooting, and hunting buddy Tall Pine built a schimmel very much like these, that also had no triggerguard. His gun had a trigger that was slanted back closer to the wrist of the stock. To fire the gun you actually had to grip the wrist of the stock and squeeze up on the trigger. He caused quite a stir the first time he took it to rendezvous. But, he shot it for years, and even hunted with it in Oregon and had no trouble.

I can imagine if he was still around, he’d be laughing, and slapping his knee, and saying I told you so.

Looking good Dan...I like out but if it was me. Which your not. I would put a forged trigger guard on it instead of brass. But I'd just leave it as is. Well done indeed.
