"Foxfire Rifle" class this July
« on: January 18, 2026, 08:08:57 AM »
Hey folks - I wanted to let you know that along with John House and Gary Ludwig I will once again be teaching the "Foxfire" class down at Hershel House's place this summer. The class is sponsored by the Hershel House Woodbury School Foundation and this will be our third time doing it. We will focus on recreating Hershel's iconic rifle built for the Foxfire 5 book - a book which many, many flintlock gunmakers over the years have cited as a major source of inspiration.

This is an extremely fun seven day gun building class. The Foxfire gun was a relatively simple, stripped down iron mounted affair but had very appealing lines based largely on original Kentucky made guns. The rifle makes for an excellent project for those who don't have much experience stocking guns from blanks - although we have had some highly skilled makers join the ranks too, some saying they just wanted to build that gun at that location! The original rifle unfortunately disappeared a long time ago from the Foxfire Museum, but I built a model based on the original which we in class use along with examples that Hershel built around the same period.

The class was announced recently and we're down to just a few spots left. For more info, have a look at the Foundation's website - https://www.woodbury-school.com/education/p/foxfire-rifle-class-july-12-18-2026  I am happy to answer any questions here.

That looks fun. What does a guy need to bring with him for this project? Also, what’s the cost for the class?

I email parts / materials lists and a tool list to folks who sign up. Basically for the gun you'd need a blank, a specific barrel and lock, and materials to make the rest of the parts in class. We have the big stuff there to use like drill press, bandsaw, grinders and forges but you'd have to bring your own hand tools. I think the class cost is around $1,000 - it is listed on the website of course. Includes lunch served daily which allows us to stay onsite longer and be as productive as we can stand to be

A few more shots of students at work and guns in progress! I think we picked up a few new students since I first posted this. We may be about full by now. I'll check with the powers that be and report back asap.

One more photo -  this one of a great father and son team, taken from outside through the front window of Hershel's shop.

AN UPDATE - the class is filling quickly. Last word I got was that we only have two spots left. If you were thinking about joining us please don't wait!

A few more photos .... here are a pair of student guns in progress. Hershel's Foxfire rifle is in many ways a relatively simple build - which allows us to cover a lot of fundamental gunmaking in a short time. New gunmakers learn a lot in a week!

A pair of Foxfire rifles stained and finished after class. Some outstanding work!

I often receive photos from customers and class friends during hunting season and this fall and winter have been no exception! This is the most recent one. The rifle was built in the first Foxfire class we did a couple years ago. Great photo!
