Where is everyone buying flints now?

Good morning,

     I am on the hunt for flints, but Track of the wolf is pretty well out of stock. Dixie wants 6$ a flint. RE Davis wants 30$ a dozen, which is not bad. However my question is where is everyone getting their flints?

Likely the same place as you.... Wherever available! Heritage Products has them in stock again, but they are also now $3.50 each. Sounds like David is the best deal if they are of same quality

Thank God about 5 years abo I got the chance to buy something like 3 or 4 hundred 3/4 x 7/8 French Amber for like $1.50 each. Got a lifetime supply now and every gun I have made I make sure the lock uses this size.

I bought a dozen French amber flints from Heritage about a year ago for 24.00 and they threw in a French black flint for free. I haven't tried the black flint yet. I'm glad I got them when I did.

About 10-15 years ago I bought about 10 pounds of the Nepalese flints. Most were very large and blocky, Charleville size. I threw about 40% away and knapped a better edge on the rest. They still sold slowly at the-enacting events as many were thick as a .50 ball. There were some smaller flints thrown in. It seemed like they all were dull as though they’d been in a tumbler together. They might be selling better batches now. I’d still expect only 10-20% to be rifle size.

Amen on the pressure flaking. I take them off the lock, place on a workbench where I can press down on the flint with my left hand to anchor the flint with the edge up off the bench. Then an antler tine filed to a narrow tip really does the trick.

I just got an order of a dozen from Heritage. They are great looking. Haven't used any yet. I will be trying to buy a dozen or so every time I see them come back in stock so I can build up my stock without being the jerk who purchases someone's entire inventory.

Question in the pressure flaking to make them last longer .... After how many shots are you guys refreshing your flints with flaking?
