While I'm waiting for Jason to build me a barrel for
MY future squirrel rifle, I'm enjoying this thread quite a lot.
Hanshi....I'm another one of those who
were guilty of ignorance of the proper use of the buckhorn sight...!!
One of my fellow-travelers at our blackpowder range offered to let me shoot his LH 40 cal. (flint) longrifle a short time back. I've never had a buckhorn sight.
I pulled her up, sighted
through the buckhorn at 25 yds, and promptly put a 40 cal hole through the top of the target. I didn't mind the shot placement..this exercise was for familiarity. We loaded her back up, I took careful aim and my second shot went right next to the first one.
Hey, this is good news I thought...so I told my buddy, "I seem to be able to shoot this thing...but I'd have to do some serious cutting on the sights to get her dialed in".
THAT was when he asked me if I had noticed the tiny notch in the BASE of the buckhorn..!!
WELL NOW.
...using the notch...my third shot went in the black, and I was on the phone soon thereafter, ordering a rifle.
