Here's a .36 cal Squirrel rifle that I've owned for over 35 years. Finally dug it out of the safe to take some pics. The only thing I know about it is that the trigger housing is marked "Steiner".
Other than that, I see no other markings. (circa 1850-1860)

c133,
Nice looking gun. I cant remember ever seeing one without panels for the lock and side plate. Thanks for showing it. There sure has been a lot of beautiful squirrel guns posted. I'm really enjoying the show!

Robby, this little .36 cal rifle has a back-action lock.  With these, there sometimes is a little bit of a panel at the forward end of the lock, around the breech snail, but almost nothing at the tail, or on the off side.  I agree...a pretty little rifle.  And many lovely rifles displayed.  thanks to all who contributed.

Robby,

Thx. As I said, I've had this rifle for over 35 years now and don't know a whole heck of a lot about it. I was told it was from the 1850-60's era and possibly from Pennsylvania. Figure I'd post some pics and see if it "tickles anyone's fancy". I realize I am going to have to have more posts to list it on the forum for sale.

We'd like to see some pics that were bigger files...these are too small to see any real detail.  It looks like a nice little rifle in good condition.

top rifle is my .32 built by Nate McKenzy,it has a swamped 44" Rice barrel and a late Ketland lock. the second rifle is a .40 built by Mike Lang,it has a swamped 44" Colerain barrel and a small round face pistol lock. both are amazingly accurate.

Joe, I love the lines of that rifle.  I have a thing for long wristed guns, I admit and that one flows nicely.

Definitely my kind of rifle.Fine job. Here is a question. Just how many more guns
could any gunmaker make if they had left off engraving and carving that add nothing to
performance and in some cases, nothing to appearance?

I'm building a .36 cal. Somerset County squirrel rifle right now. As for the squirrel dog, I had a Fox Terrier cross that I use for deer hunting ( I live on the left coast, where we have to kick them out of the brush, and shoot them on the run, a dog helps) that would give me about three hours of brush thrashing, and then switch over to squirrel hunting. She also did this if I missed a shot at a deer.

I have one of those, the little guy in my avatar. Otto will kill most any critter he sees. Did a real fine job after
the fire in August. All the rodents moved into the unburned areas and you could literally stand and see them running every where.
He spent days hunting and killing, I quit conting after 35 or so. He was one tired, happy dog!
By the way, that was the first big fire in Wa. back in August. We lost our house, my leather and wood shop,
and 2 storage buildings. I did save most all my BP guns, my 2 heavy target .22s, and 1 modern pistol. But
I lost about 45 modern and antique cartridge guns and pistols, along with everything else.
We did get all(40) dogs and 5 horses out, but just not enough time or room for it all.
