Its a .62 cylinder bore, 46" Long Hammock barrel on what is conceived of as a parts gun that might have been made in middle GA of old fowling piece parts and a new English trade lock and without a buttplate or entry thimble. Styled and carved with a tip of the hat to two then very popular GA gunbuilders from nearby Indian Springs, GA and Gray, GA, Wiley G Higgins and Richard Allen. Note the carved buttplate using Higgens typical paneled design as well as the incised lines along the comb....

Made for shootin turkeys, hogs and whitetail at the close ranges of middle GA..... On his farm there was a time about 75 years ago it would have been used for scarin off revenooers too....

Hard maple blank with 5/16" RR hole stained with Ferric Nitrate, Sealed with 1 # cut of dewaxed garnet shellac and finished with true oil and Renaissance wax. Dangler's Browning solution. Hickory rr with three inch steel tapered tip and 8-32 female fitting. Internally coned touch hole thanks to Tom Snyder tool.

Those who remember an in-progress post will note that the beautiful dogwood blossom relief carving is no longer on the cheekpiece of the gun

Neat gun, it looks like that old GA farmer used to live in NC where he picked up the comb incised lines. Then he wandered up to the Derr Getz shop for the faux butt plate, on his way back to GA he probably stopped by the McGilvary shop in VA to pick-up that cheek rest

Guess he was a traveling man!

I worked on a fowler from Louisanna once that had a 46 " fowler barrel English proofs from the 1770's and a percussion Enfield lock the butt plate was straight and hammered out of brass I think the trigger guard was from an Enfield too. Wasn't pretty like yours though

1/16" drill through the barrel and then coned inside the barrel using the little tool that Tom Snyder makes and sells.... piece of cake!!

Be careful drilling into hole like a rifle bore, The drill bit can snag on that radius and then all kinds of fun occurs trying to get it out,especially if it breaks off below the outer surface of the barrel. The way I manage this is to have no more of the drill than is actually needed to get thru the wall of the barrel,wall thickness plus 1/16" will work in this case. Use a new drill bit as well,preferably one that is TiN coated.Use no more pressure than is really needed to make the bit advance into the barrel.
Good luck. One other thing,what is a Long Hammock barrel??

Really nice! Working on similar style "made up of parts type ". Walnut stock oct./round .62 rifled. The original the drawing was made of that I am loosely following was supposed to be from Virginia. Have Chambers round face lock almost inlet. Still debating on forging plain buttplate or none. Have iron musket triggerguard. Trade musket brass thimbles no entry thimble? This project is evolving as I go. Grease hole or slider or maybe even real plain iron box? Original drawing shows pewter nosecap? Lots of decisions to make.

Nice fantasy piece, Tim. The paneled butt (from W.G. Higgins influence) is a fun touch. What happened to the dogwood idea? BTW, Richard Allen worked in Clinton Township. See you soon.

I like it, so much that I wish you had gone even further with some more faux Higgins touches carved in, but I guess you went as far a the utilitarian concept would allow!

My hand cranked Champion drill press hasn't broken a bit yet as long as the work is clamped down and I use cutting fluid, I should get one continuous swarf out of the barrel...no chips. Good advice though, I have to much time in the barrel to kill it now Bob.

I drilled the hole and did the coning with my eggbeater hand powered drill .. I think safer is better...
