Besides the recent release of the 1940 US Census, a recent development for researchers is the LDS Family History Library cataloging cemetery data collected by the Find-a-Grave organization of volunteers:

You can contribute as well as extract data by simply registering as a Find-a-Grave volunteer.  Some examples of gunmakers on the site include:

Peter Newhard (1743-1813)

Jacob Kuntz (1780-1876)

David Moll (1807-1853)

Johannes Moll (before 1746-1794)

Peter Kuntz (1790-1862)

Jacob Neuhard (1752-1835)

Conrad Newhard (1783-1853)

William H Moll (1836-1877)

David Moll (1807-1853)

Edwin Moll (1839-1900)

David M Moll (1849-1926)

Josiah David Moll (1838-1873)

Thanks for posting this.  I went to the find-a-grave website and found several early Illinois gunsmiths, a couple of them with obituaries. I also found my great-great grandfather's grave (a Civil War veteran) in California. I joined find-a-grave and have already added some information.
