New flint rifle does the job
« on: November 11, 2012, 01:13:10 AM »
Here's a photo of a nice MN doe that I took late yesterday afternoon on my farm here in central MN.  She's been feeding all summer long on my corn, clover, and alfalfa and I never saw any fawns with her. She's in pretty good shape-other than being dead.

The rifle is one I built last winter with a .52 caliber swamped barrel from Charles Burton, Davis Colonial American lock,  and a single set trigger from MLBS.

The load was 70 gr KIK 2fg, a 204 gr. .513" ball, .015" ticking.

She was at about 45-50 yards and  a behind the shoulder hit dropped in her tracks.

Way to go.  She looks like a real hog, do you know what she weighed?  Looks like she would push 175+

Very nicely done!  The old mountain men had an expression I like..."fat cow is better than poor bull".

Thanks everyone.

Not sure how much the doe weighed but I was able to load her into the truck alone without busting a gut, not easy but I managed. We got a nice bunch of meat from her. She had gobs of fat around her rump and it was near an inch thick on her back and ribs.

I'll keep the rifle Ray....for now anyway!

hanshi- The rifle is just like what I think might have been built in the Colonies 1760-1770. Not a copy of anything really, just a style I like. I'll try to take a couple photos  in a day or two and post them.

Congratulations Ted! Nice fat doe. I dressed out a yearling buck on Tuesday with a real heavy layer of fat too. I'm surprised to see that green grass tho. I live in Otter Tail County, (west central Minnesota) and it's dry, dry, dry here, except for this morning. Several inches of snow and 18 F.

pake-

It's dry here in Todd County too. The grass in the picture isn't too far from a marshy willow swamp and it stayed green, well, greener around the swamp even tho the water level is way down.

Maybe the thick fat on our deer is an indication of a colder than normal winter....? We'll see shortly I suppose. It was 16° here at 5 a.m.  Warmer later in the week they say.

Thanks again.

Here are the only pics I could get of the rifle before my camera decided to quit on me.
