Walnut Longrifles?

I just picked up a nice walnut blank. I planned on making an English fowler. But, before I start, are there many walnut rifles documented?  ???

If I remember right, Jacob Hoak made a nice Lancaster rifle in walnut.

It is rare, but there are examples extant.

More Southern longrifles were made of walnut than anywhere else. But at the end of the 19th century many California guns were stocked in walnut as well.

Several original rifles pictured in "Rifles of Colonial America" are stocked in American Walnut. It appears to be more prominent in southern rifles. Curly maple sure is pretty, but I like those walnut rifles too. The contrast between the dark wood and brass can be striking.

Its a beautiful piece of wood. Great figure on the patchbox side, and Burl on the cheek piece. I'll work on uploading photos in the next few days. I am going to do my homework before I cut into this piece. Thank you for the help.

I had problems trying to edit in photobucket. It wouldn't save the new image. I may set this piece aside until my skill level is worthy of the wood. :P

Numerous examples. The Antes swivel breech, and early rifle, is stocked in Walnut. I just dislike working the stuff.

Here are a couple of links to two Reading area rifle's I've done in walnut. The first one RCA #28 was originally stocked in Walnut. The second one was originally stocked in maple but I thought it would look good in walnut.

Thanks Mitch. Beautiful work on both.
David R.- That's what I thought. I bought it from a fellow club member at the show in Noblesville. I started to walk by, he had the right side facing out, I asked to see the other side & well... That's why the ol' wallet  has a secret stash!! ;D

That piece of walnut is stunning.  My buddy and I are building 2 early VA rifles using locally cut black walnut and I believe that they are going to be really nice when completed.  I have seen numerous VA rifles in walnut.

Thanks Hawken, if you get any pictures, I'd love to see them. I took a few picture's of a couple of rifles/fowlers at the same show. Masterpieces, way out of my skill level. Hey, you have to shoot for something .

Absolutely beautiful. It stands out like a goose egg in a bucket of coal.
Where did the silver butt plate and triggwer guard come from?
