Taking another crack at a lehigh. Plain hard maple, not one curl in it. Colerain 38" Oct/rnd .50 smooth Zornes Classic lock, EK box casting, All the rest of the castings are from the local foundry.

I like them all. I'm building this one just to experiment with lehigh architecture. The first one I built fit great. All the others I have build were a little snug at the cheek bone. I have taken patterns off of originals, used a Martin pattern, fooled around with Eric von  Auschwieg's patterns, Taylor was kind enough to mail me his pattern, and I have often drew out my own.  I have vague memories of the first one's lay out....I took my pattern and transferred it on the stock and told myself "that will never work" so I erased it and dropped the pattern down to give it more drop and the fit was perfect.....so I don't have a pattern of it and have been trying to copy the drop of original guns ever since with no success.    SO...I took a couple days and just  sat down with paper and pencil a started drawing until I was able to get 1 1/2 drop at the comb and 3" at the heel.....we'll see what happens. All of this is why I used an el cheapo (but hard) slightly wormy piece of wood and a bargain barrel. I have several goals with this one. 1) prove my pattern is correct. 2) practice the architecture. I really enjoy building these but I'm not confident with all the nuance' that goes with these goofy Lehighs. Heck, I still get freaked over the "V" shaped forestock, let alone the buttstock. 3) There is some Lehigh wrist carving I have always like and want to try, so it goes on this one. 4) I have always wanted to see how these cast brass boxes go...now's the time.

Foul language I can do. But you'll just have to take my ******* word for it.   (Did you guys know that ACTUAL foul language can be used now?)

It won't be a "classic" retirement where you sit in your recliner and croak in 6 months. This will be business as usual with slightly more fishing that is guilt free. Tried it yesterday, very enjoyable. Did have a twinge of gilt that sent me out in the shop from about 4 till 5:30 PM late yesterday afternoon. Told the wife she was going to do all the cooking now sine I was retire. She told me I could go retire somewhere else as my cooking is my only redeeming quality.
