Barrel flats filing fixture

This was posted before but in the wrong place.

Every blue moon I come up with and idea that works. I was not particularly looking forward to striking the barrel flats on my Jim Chambers English sporting rifle. Somehow in the basement of my memory I came up with this idea on draw filing flats. I had this idea stored away and it is not my idea but I thought I would see if it worked on barrel flats. Let me tell you that, as they say in England “ It works a treat”.
I turned two aluminum cones that had straight sections that slipped into the bore. Drilled two countersunk hole in the wood cradle. To slip the cones in. The barrel spins freely so however the file touches the bbl flats the file is always flat to the flats and take the skill and human error out of the equation. I’m using a Bahco 10” mill bastard and drawfile the usual way but I finish up with the file lengthwise (break and smooth both ends of the file) useing thin gloves. The file will bend to the swamped contour and prevent a wavy surface.

Today I remade the fixture to be adjustable to accommodate different bbl lengths.

I assume different cones for different calibers?

Easy to make IF you have a lathe and aluminum will not damage the breech threads or the muzzle.It's been over 20 years since I draw filed a barrel and I now get tired thinking of doing it again.

You don't need aluminum, you can turn them from wood.
