Continued drawing/leather experiments
« on: February 14, 2023, 10:50:12 PM »
Wanted to share some of the leather items I've been experimenting with this winter. I've always liked to draw and have become interested in applying drawings to 3-dimensional accouterments and other objects for more "practical art". Leather has provided a nice canvas that is simple and fairly clean to work with, so I can be near my daughter.

Most recently I'm building off some feedback from the CLA show and trying some integrated flap pouches. My first, the cherub bag, has some issues but the second, the hunter, came out a bit better on construction.

The wallets and other small pouches are an easy way to play with designs because they are small and the rectangles offer simple compositions. The wallets are made from Jeff Luke's pattern.

The black lines are applied as ink, the cuts are made with a small veining palm chisel. I apply the dye in layers like watercolor with a paint brush to get the different tones.

Comments and critiques are welcome, always willing to learn!

Inspiration taken from Ken Scott, Lawrence Fiorillo, Eric Van Alstine, Eric Ewing, Jeff Luke and Robert Scrivener to name a few.

I like the applied art and the color tones look great. Just curious…do you use a sealer for added durability?

Those are pretty neat Ethan. Looks like you are developing a good technique there for sure. Very nice.

I've been coating them with oil at the end. I have a few of the first tests that I've held onto to see what happens. So far nothing much changing with use.

Thank you TC and Doug! Appreciate it!

Thanks…the oil is probably the safer of the bet.
