Bill, I was wondering if maybe a French Curve would be of help in your sketching in engraving components.  They come in various sizes, from about 4" long on up.
Might keep you from fighting the kinks and flat spots.

It would help sometimes. Problem is that you are limited to sketching just that curve. Also the sketch is just a guide. Flat spots and kinks in pencil don't matter. You still have to cut it into the metal. I think the only solution is more practice.

My engraving work still needs a lot of practice, but overall I am happy with how it turned out. I got quite a lot of practice on this one!

Nice work, Bill.  And now to add color to the metal!

Next weekend is ramrod. Weekend after that is the color on the metal.

It's interesting, as the individual lines might not be perfect (no offense meant!), but the whole is looking very good.
On the same note, I'm not a huge fan of the super precise engraving on modern guns. They often end up lacking character, despite the high level of craftsmanship.

I agree. I engraved this under magnification. As I am working the lines don't look all that good and there is just endless number of things that could have been better. But when you step back and look at it as a whole, it looks pretty good. I looked at some close up photos of very well engraved rifles by Holland & Holland. It is definitely better work than what I do. But even excellent engraving doesn't look nearly as good when viewed close up.

I think a big problem with engraving is that a lot of people try for the first time and it doesn't turn out very good. Instead of putting more work into it, they decide they can't do it and just give up. If you put some effort into it, it is not that hard to become a mediocre engraver. Going from mediocre to good takes a lot more work.

That super precise engraving that you see on modern guns is usually done with a computer and a laser. No craftsmanship is involved at all.

Nice job there, Bill.  You've got it looking the way YOU want, and at the end, that's important.

I've also used many different types of bluing, and each method has it's pluses and minuses - all depends on the builder's and the buyer's desires.

I use Oxpho Blue quite a long time.  With care and repeating, it can be made to suit almost anyone.

Overall, Bill, you've made a rifle you can be proud of, and you've greatly improved many of your skills.  The engraving in particular really improved your abilities at that task

Health is going south at a faster clip.  I'll be 80 in a few months, and the combination of war and most of a lifetime in the wilds have combined, and are wreaking havoc.  The VA continues to take excellent care of me; every staff member at Columbus, OH VA facility really care about the welfare of we Veterans.

When I was six, we were living in London, England.  I had learned to read about age 4, and was looking at the newspaper while having breakfast with my Dad.  Noticing the date on the paper, I quickly realized that I would be 55 at the turn of the century, and told my Dad, who agreed with me.  Then I added, "But I'll be dead long before that."  He asked why, and I just replied that I would be living and working in rough places.

Well, that last part was right - a lifetime of swamps, jungles, forests, weird animals, HAS been rough.  Couple of open-heart surgeries, as well as other cutting, fixing, sewing up - didn't make it easier.  But, here I am.  For how much longer, who knows?  But I'll continue to try to enjoy life as much as I can.

And your rotating vise is still sitting in the shop!  One day soon, I hope.

I'm happy with how this one turned out. And I had a lot of fun building it. I learn new stuff on every one of these. The engraving still needs lots of practice. If I keep at it I just might get good at it one day.

I really like browning the metal. The cold blue just works a lot better with engraving.

If life isn't interesting then it is all just pointless.

Only two videos left in this series. I think I will post them today and finish this one off.
