That's happened to many others as well. You MIGHT be able to minimize some of the damage if you can file up and down instead of length ways.   :-\

Remember to plug the vent hole prior to the browning repair so you don't rust the bore through the vent hole. I would also run an oiled rag down the bore and leave it there until the browning is done.

Flatten out a pop or a tin can.   Drill or punch hole size needed.  If drilling make sure to clamp the metal down when drilling so if the drill catches it does not start to spin.  Cut to size needed.  Use as a "cover" for the browned area when filing.  Go slow.  Duct tape layer(s) works as a "cover" also.

Thickness of material may cause liner surface to be just above barrel surface, if this is acceptable.

Not perfect, but it gives a mental "safety margin".....

All the best on the rework!

I have an antique milling machine.  It works great for this kind of thing.  After grabbing the barrel and leveling the flat I use feeler gauges to determine how close the cutter is tho the barrel.  You should be able to get within a couple thousands before the chips mess up the finish.  IF you want closer you can park over the liner and move the knee the last couple of thousands straight up.

You may want to give Tom Snyder a call and get one of his inside coning tools. They are inexpensive and work very well. You will have to de breech the barrel. But that is not as big a PITA as having to file the WL liner and re -browning. Or buying a mill or having someone else do it. By the way coning a barrel from the inside is a lot easier than installing a liner of any kind.

You might want to see Jim Everett's version of an inside coning tool. He posted it on here in a thread called "Flash Hole Chamfer Tool".

One of those inside the barrel coneing tools might be ok BUT would they work when he already has a hole large enough for a liner ?  :-\

Gary, I supposed Yip had marked where the liner was supposed to go with a punch. Frankly I can't see someone browning a barrel with a gaping hole at the breech. I have come close to doing the same thing marking the location of the liner with a punch, so I can keep working till I get a liner.
I prefer to cone from the inside. It is quicker to do. It looks better and a liner can always be installed if it burns out.
