That's happened to many others as well. You MIGHT be able to minimize some of the damage if you can file up and down instead of length ways.   :-\

Remember to plug the vent hole prior to the browning repair so you don't rust the bore through the vent hole. I would also run an oiled rag down the bore and leave it there until the browning is done.

Flatten out a pop or a tin can.   Drill or punch hole size needed.  If drilling make sure to clamp the metal down when drilling so if the drill catches it does not start to spin.  Cut to size needed.  Use as a "cover" for the browned area when filing.  Go slow.  Duct tape layer(s) works as a "cover" also.

Thickness of material may cause liner surface to be just above barrel surface, if this is acceptable.

Not perfect, but it gives a mental "safety margin".....

All the best on the rework!

I have an antique milling machine.  It works great for this kind of thing.  After grabbing the barrel and leveling the flat I use feeler gauges to determine how close the cutter is tho the barrel.  You should be able to get within a couple thousands before the chips mess up the finish.  IF you want closer you can park over the liner and move the knee the last couple of thousands straight up.
