Hot off the Bench

Rifle specifications;
The rifle is built around a Rice 38” ‘C’ weight .50 caliber barrel.  The stock is a piece of curly ash I acquired from Randy Cochran around 8 years or so years ago.  The lock is a large Siler built by Walter Cain.  I have had this lock sitting around in my lock drawer for 20 plus years.  The steel furniture is all hand made by myself, as is the hand split rammer.  The double set DST 4 triggers were modified per Gun Builders Companion 2, by Frank House.  The stock is finished using 2 coats of aqua fortis that was made in Montana by my late friend Joe Sharber, and blushed between applications.  I followed this up with an application of Kline's Orange Toner.  Next, I put some True Coat on an applicator, then I dipped the wetted applicator in some lamp black and applied this to the entire stock, waited a few minutes and then rubbed the entire stock down with a lint free towel, leaving the lamp black to collect in the low relief areas.  I rubbed in a second application of True Coat and will probably rub in one or two more coats.  The metal was etched in a 3 to 1 solution of water and Clorox bleach.  I have not used this finish in probably over 20 years but it was appropriate for this project.  After the Clorox treatment the barrel went through 3 rust brown cycles with heavy carding after each cycle.   The rifle weighs 8 lbs. 5 oz.  The length of pull is 13 3/8”.

I think Hershel would be pleased. Very nice, Dave.

That’s a pretty “racy” looking rifle that you have built  ;D

And I can assume that this one will be staying in Kentucky where it belongs?

Beautiful!  I love the barrel tang carving/molding:  Simple, precise, and elegant.  This is one of those forum guns I'll be coming back to look at again and again.

You're going to look very cool carrying this rifle while surfing the tidal-wave to Stoner Creek  8)
Godspeed,

A little emery or wet/dry and some wrist twisting and the muzzle would be perfect too, Dave. Wayne?

I would advise Mr Rase to plan on leaving this piece at Stoner Creek or I cannot insure his safe passage out of our commonwealth. Just good advice, nothing else 🤷‍♂️.

She's a hottie alright!  8) The color combination, metal finish and the carving all work well together.  Really nice work, Dave!  Thanks for posting it.

I also like it all, especially the wood finish, wonderful color and warmth.  What is True Coat?  My searches have come up empty, likely my weak computer-fu.
Never mind, guess it's Wahkon Bay TruCoat.
