The finish is fantastic. Did you use your bone black in the finish process?

Ok,
Now I’m leaning more towards a Hawken kit than the woodsrunner!
Other than it being beautifully done, it is also available in .58 caliber which I need to fill the big bore gap. I have a double rifle in .58 caliber, but the ADF&G will not allow it for the muzzloader hunts because it has two shots not one. (I know stupid)

Are they rifled to shoot conical bullets?

Who makes a .58 with a fast twist?
I had a Large barrel with 66" ROT on a S. Hawken Taylor built for me and it shot well with up to 675gr. bullets at 1,325fps. This JK HAWKEN is a mite light for that sort of abuse. Mine weighed 11 pounds & still kicked TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much.
480gr. at 1,600fps were not much lighter in recoil, but they both shot sub 2" at 100yards (might have been meters) and with it's open sights, off the bench.
The .58 rifle-muskets and rifles of the civil war period only had 48" ROT's in the British guns. The American guns all had 72" ROT's, seems to me. My Remington Zouave did 2" at 100 metres with patched round balls and 120gr. 2F GOEX. You do not need a slug for a .58, IMHO unless you are going to Africa or India for dangerous game.

Handsome piece! One thing to which Jim referred in the video is the mid 19th Century phenomenon of Hawken-style rifles of heavy caliber with very narrow buttstocks. I've a fairly heavy New York sporting rifle of .50 caliber that fits that pattern, especially the deeply curved, narrow buttplate. It's become obvious to me it was NOT intended to be fired repeatedly with moderately heavy charges from the bench.

LOL - been there many times with modern guns, but my .69 doesn't do that. The 2" butt plate & proper geometry of the stock helps reduce the damage.  ;D
That .58 Hawken however, shooting slugs did exactly that dmg.

Is the lock of your own CNC type or is it purchased from someone else?

Jim,
It would be nice if you could show a few photos of the lock up close, inside and out, and offer any comments you want about it. If you did that already somewhere then I missed it, so just give a link if you have video of that, etc.
Thanks,
Whetrock

He makes all his own locks.  Including the new percussion lock.  Talked about it in the video I believe too.

It's a shame that to be a successful manufacturing business you have to use cnc and other advanced technology. Sure its easier, faster, and maybe even better quality but it takes away from the awesome struggle. Like when you have to pack a deer 3 miles out it makes you enjoy the deer just so much more. The struggle is what makes things special.

It's the world we live in.  In one sense we get romantic about certain things but then accept all of the benefits from technology in other areas.  The nice thing is that as a hobby you can choose whatever process you want to.  Also, many manual tasks sound romantic, but when you've done them a thousand times it starts to feel different!

The discussion of dangerous game had strayed far off the original topic of this thread, so it has been split off and moved to OTBF.  Here's a link if you want to continue that discussion.... https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=86538.0

Discussion here should be kept to the new Kibler kit.  Thanks.

Again, let me say that this reproduction is a work of art. The lines are wonderful and the fit is short of nothing.

Now, that said when I buy any firearm 99% of the time I buy with the intent to use it for hunting. Here in Pa., other than the 1 week early muzzle loader season, and the two week rifle season, this cap lock firearm could not be used.

So, I keep looking at this build and ask myself “can I convert this to a flintlock”?  The Kibler lock would require some work, or replacing it with a “kit” (shape the lockplate from a rectangle piece), plus the Hawken breech would need replaced with one for a flint.

While neither of these modifications would be exceptionally difficult, I think sometimes I think too much.

I like the name you've given this rifle....ie:  JK Hawken rifle.  It is a fine tribute to the original design, and I think it incorporates the best features of early J & S Hawkens, and the later S. Hawken rifles.  The fact that it is lighter by four pounds than my own Hawken build is a big plus.  I watched the video carefully, studying all the nuances that make or break a Hawken rifle, such as the design and execution of the breech plug and standing breech tang, the position of the rear sight on the barrel, and the nice sculpting of the lock bolt inlay, the trigger plate finial, and the finial on the entry pipe.  I like too the heel of the butt plate and the depth of the butt which adds much to the beauty and grace of the rifle.  I too would like to see a photo of the inside of the lock.  I like the half cock notch allows lots of clearance over the nipple for capping.
On the video rifle, there is a little black dot on the wood immediately above the forward end of the lock plate..worm hole, pin to reinforce an area prone to cracking...?  Nicely done overall Jim!!

Thanks Taylor.  I appreciate the thoughts and kind words.  Here is a pricture of the lock internals (not sure why it's upside down).  These are the same as our Ketland lock.  I've intended to make a sligtly dumbed down bridle more appropriate for mid 19th century work, but haven't done it yet.  The next picture shows the lock at half cock.
