T.O.T.W. Mink oil/grease
« on: January 16, 2026, 12:29:10 AM »
I looked today and still don't see on the Track of the wolf web site their mink oil/grease. I would buy 10 cans at a time and freeze them. They would last that way for ever. When I needed more lube I would take 1 can out, thaw it then melt it in an old sauce pan over very low heat. Once melted I would add an equal amount of 100% pure Neetsfoot oil stir to combine then let it sit in the pot in my unheated garage. Does anyone know for sure what the status of the mink oil from them is? I probably have enough components to make enough lube for the remainder of my shooting career, but they take up very little space in my freezer.

There was some discussion about this a few months ago.  I'm not sure if it was on FB or here.  The consensus was that the supplier had aged out of making it, and that it was no longer available.

Very sad that no one else could pick up the recipe and continue making it, as this is my go to lube.  I would use it straight out of the can, but I like your idea of mixing it to make what I have last longer.

Yea it was here a few months ago. I was just curious if there were any factual up dates. I don't mix it with pure neetsfoot oil to make it go further I mix them because after through testing I felt it made a better lube.

The addition of Neestfoot Oil should make the Mink Oil thinner, I would assume, rather than the easily softened paste that it is in the tin.

I will be trying this out from SPG.  SPG says "you can't outshoot the bear"!

You do know it has zero real bear oil in it? If it can also be used for BPCR shooting it probably has some wax in it. I would investigate it further before using it.

"Appears" as if it has Vaseline in it.

Beerd: your eyes don't deceive you the can does say bear grease. That does not mean it has any bear grease in it. In fact it doesn't have an iota of bear grease in it.

That shiny "Texture" is so VERY close to what I got with Vaseline and paraffin. Appears HIGH Vaseline content.
Yes, Vaseline is a petroleum product, BUT, it is a petroleum WAX, this works well with black powder fouling. The
very best BP bullet lube I have found, for muzzleloaders or ctg. rifles was 60:40, BW:VAS.
A ASSUME the Vaseline was the softener, while the BWax was simply a stiffener for the lube.

I'm just wondering if U.S. Army Alaska (USARAK) knows that someone is using their old "Sugar Bear" patch on a commercial product.

Fiebing’s has five permutations of mink oil. Has anyone tried any of them as a patch lube?

I called Track on Jan 15 as to inquire about the possibly of making it for them because I'd heard on the web that the maker was in bad heath?

I asked the fellow on the phone about the situation of it being out of stock and he said there was an ingredient they couldn't get and he wasn't going to give me the recipe,, I said I didn't ask you for the recipe.
Also he said they make the lube and the guy I had heard that made it just pours it up in the tins for Track.

I've got bear oil, whale oil and the older Hoppes 9 plus to try. I like Tracks but it's far from the only thing that can work.

Well maybe there is hope they can get some of the missing ingredient and make it again for those of us that like it.

Regarding the SPG "Bear Grease" above here is what they advertise for what it is worth.

SPG BEAR Grease:  This product was developed primarily for cool or cold weather use, however, it has multiple uses and makes a fantastic year-round patch lube. Upon development I started out with goals for the lubricant that are listed below:

It would remain soft and oily even at freezing temperatures.
It would perform beyond expectations as a ML patch lube, especially in hunting conditions.
It would perform exceedingly well as bullet lube on both muzzleloading and cartridge bullets.
It would have enough consistency for effectively being used in pan lubing bullets.
It would have the consistency for being effectively used in bullet Lubri-sizers.
It would support keeping powder and barrel fouling soft as expected of all SPG bullet lubricants.
It would be an effective barrel bore prep and storage treatment.
It would exceed accuracy expectations in the hunting field and competition.
* Additional applications:
It’s a very effective brass case sizing wax. If you like the current popular case sizing wax, you will love Bear Grease.
It can effectively be used as a 22RF bullet lubricant. Testing has shown it prevents the carbon ring from developing in the chamber causing chambering and feed/fouling issues. Comes in a 2oz tin or 8oz block only.

I don't know Al, but the Princess Auto store here had some small tins of what they called "mink oil". They were only about 5 bucks a tin. Next time over that way, I'll pick one up and read the contents, buy it and try it, if no petroleum in it.
