new rifle work stand +MORE photos now
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:23:08 PM »
Just a little fyi thing that might help someone else just starting out too.  I'm feeling kind of proud of the rifle building work stand I just put together real cheaply.

I used an old wheel, one of those shorty Jac-posts that adjusts from 2'10" to 4' 7" and a 40 inch long scrap of 2x10 full dimension oak decking.   I had the base half of the Jac-post solidly welded into the wheel (shallow side down) against the side wall. And the top plate that comes with the jack solidly welded to the upper half so that when the cross bolts are in the posts and the the plank lagbolted to the plate will run across the wheel.  I discarded the threaded jack screw.   Now I have an easily portable solid work surface that adjustable for height for sitting or standing.  Having the deep part of the wheel being uppermost will allow me to make and add removable weights if it gets unsteady

I have a woodworkers vise on order  to mount on the front face of the plank.  I mounted one of those high intensity light/magnifying lens lamps on the back side. I have a powerstrip with a 10ft heavy gauge cord that I'll mount on the back of the lower post[/img].  I'll be adding a magnetic rack for my chisels and carving tool to keep them up off the work surface.  So far, including the purchase of the parts and paying the welder, I've got less than 35 bucks in it.

DWS,

I too would love to see pictures.  TinyPic.com is a free and easy way to post pictures.  No account necessary.  check it out at http://tinypic.com/

You may want to check out the swivel base at http://ellenwoodarts.com/main.htm for your vise.  It looks very similar to the one Jim Chambers once sold.  It's the closest thing to full 360 degree capability I have seen.  I am fortunate enough to have one of Jim's
Hope this helps

Forgot to mention,

If memory serves me correctly, Acer or Taylor posted a thread on how to post pictures using Photobucket or TinyPix

Thanks I'll check both the site and the vice out.  I've got a few errands to run and a ASSRA Board meeting this evening.  when I get done I'll down load the pics form the camera and see if I can get them whittled down and posted.

Should be a tutorial on posting pictures.  Pretty simple once you figure it out. Just checked - Acer has a picture tutorial - simple to follow.

alright already :D  Here are three shots.  Its really very simple but I've worked on it some today and I think it'll do great.
In a week or two I'll cast two sak-crete weights for the wheel at the base, one for each half with a handle of some sort to lift them out.  It works fine right now with my carvinggtool box setting on it. But I'm not doing any heavy chiseling right now mostly scraping and shaving.  The weight will probably be needed when  start the next one and am carving on the butt to fit the buttplate.
I apologize for the living room,  I'm single, and cat doesn't care either

addendum: when I get the woodworkers clamp later today  I think I'll bore 3 sets of holes in the face edge and put threaded inserts for machine screws in them. That way I can easily shift the clamp to either end or a center position as needed.  I'll also put a few on each end so I can mount or move an extended work rest to support the unclamped end of the stock.  Using the threaded inserts and machine screws will be a lot better in the long run than screwing in and out with wood screws.
Once it get it a little more complete I'll add another photo or two

Hey, no need to apologize for a bench in the living room!!!  My first rifle was made on a bench in my bedroom, right next to the bed all I had to do was stand up in the morning.  ;D Oh, I almost forgot I was living in a mobile home at the time.

I think you should just bolt it to the floor!
Being single does have it's advantages.
Now if I can just find a way to park my sports car in the living room,,,,, ;D

Hmmm - brings back memories when I was first married- my loading bench was in the bedroom - new wife complained often about stepping on spent primers.  Didn't like the spilt powder in the rug, either.

Way to go DWS!

"I'd be chasin' that thing all over the house the way I work"

you gotta put the FLAT side of the wheel DOWN ;D

I know what you mean that's why I figure on adding the concrete ballast, but it such a way I can take it out to move it---in case someone I want to impress comes to visit.

being single (again) has its advantages--but more than a few disadvantages as well

Great bench!!  Thanks for the pix.

"threaded inserts and machine screws ".  This might be what you were referring to, but I would suggest using tee nuts.  They kinda look with a thin walled nut with a washer on the end and the washer has 3(?) barbs protruding from it.  You should be able to get them at any hardware store and they are available up to at least 3/8".  I used them on my bench the same way you intend to.  They go in from the under side and work great.  ;D

the woodworkers vise, face mounts to the edge of the wood.  to use T-nuts I'd have to drill ALL the way through the plank edgwise and use like 12 inch bolts.   I got the vise and am working on mounting it.  another pic later this afternoon

heres the vise from one source (http://www.toolup.com/irwin/226361.html?AdCamp=CA&utm_source=CAfroogle&utm_medium=CA&utm_term=irwin+226361&CAWELAID=318001662)

otherwise its Irwin part # 226361   your local ace etc hardware can get them

here we go 3 more that show the clamp

I have the wood workers vise screwed to the edge of the bench with flatheaded (cone-shaped phillips) machine screws.  I put 3 sets of inserts in the edge one at each end and one in the center.  I was going to put the end support on with the inserts too but they don't want to go well into the very hard seasoned end grain.  I may wind up acraglassing them in.  I have another special movable hold-down clamp to install and want to find and install a small ball pivoting  vise in the center to hold metal parts for filing and polishing.  I did add a bunch of ballast to the wheel.  found a half a dozen 20+ pound ingots of  hard lead--linotype and WW in my lead supply--stuff I salvaged and cast up years ago when I was shooting handgun sillhouettes  they fit in nicely and there is now NO risk of tipping it over

I built it so it would be solid.  It has a little wobble since the two post sections are not a real tight slip fit.  I'm going to make some shims to lock it up.
I put the post off center in the wheel so that the work surface is centered.  If I were to pull the bolts out of the post where the 2 sections slip in to each other, I could rotate it in 90 degree increments and rebolt it.  If one wanted one could weld the post in the center of the wheel and and design a pivot in---but then you'd have to engineer a way to lock it solid when you wanted to.
