I've just gone through this thread and replaced all of the images that Photobucket pirated.  It would be a boon to all of us if other posters would do likewise.  My thanks in adviance!!

Since I do not have the option of editing my post on page 1, I submit this. This is my .32 Squirrel rifle, purchased from Jim Chambers many years ago. He converted it to flint for me, as it was a cap-lock at the time of sale. He had it on consignment for 'someone' we cannot remember who.  I have since replaced the .32 barrel with a .36 Rice barrel. It looks quite similar so these photos will suffice.
As far as I know, it's fairly close to what a generic Tenn. Mtn. rifle might look like, if it had cast parts. lol

how do i get a url for a picture

I like it, Daryl.  That's a good looking rifle I'd like to take into the squirrel woods with me on a fine, crisp morning.

Although only roughed in for the sights, I've almost "Aced" the trail with that, think I only missed one, the 95 yard rabbit, but picked that up on the R.Fisher Re-entry. (ie: second shot that does not count, except for personal gratification).

I would indeed be good for squirrels, Hanshi. I may take it to Yuma with me next October.  She's cheap on powder and lead.

I just knock them out of the top of the tree with the end of the barrel.

Sequatchie,

That should work!

My squirrel doesn't have a rifle.....Don't rust him with anything with  a longer range.

I’ve had this rifle for a year and haven’t shot it- seems too much work to load it and too much work to clean it! It was built for chunk shooting.

I believe Ed Rayl did the barrel. The stock is made from a single piece of ash that cost $900! I have the ball molds, it’s .47 caliber. That little pirate squire just doesn’t look a bit trustworthy...

If you're carrying that squirrel hunting you need to change your handle to "Sasquatchie Rifle"!  :)

That little guy is caggy looking! I wouldn’t trust him with a rifle either!

Nothing is too big if you're accurate enough to take head shots.

I found my .69 was a bit on the large size, if one wanted the meat for fare.
Too, the 482gr. ball per squirrel was a bit of a waste of pure lead.

Well then a 4 bore otta knock him off his feet with a near miss all though that might be considered a waste of lead too

You can do what is called barking. You shoot the branch the squirrel is standing on and the brach and the stunned squirrel come crashing down. Then you jump on the squirrel and put it in a chokehold. Make sure the little bugger doesn't bite you.

I think barking squirrels might work better on Eastern Hardwoods.

I tried it with Fir trees - no good, bark is too thick to do anything but absorb the ball. Either hit the squirrel and blow it apart with any hit, or a near miss leaves him running away.
I tired it on Lodge Pole  Pine and Spruce trees - only once it worked, but I think I brushed him with the side of the ball as he had a small chunk missing, so maybe that was not fair?

Perhaps my .69 was just not very good for the job.  I might try the .36 next time. More speed, maybe mor ebark flying? Hard to imagine the 64gr. ball doing more damage than the 482gr. ball.

I used to bark squirrels on a regular basis by aiming at the junction of the head/neck and the edge of the limb. a slight miss either way resulted in a harvested squirrel!

Most all my squirrel hunting has been with .32 and .36 rifles; they work fine and never messed up a squirrel with either one.  Miss the head and make a body hit and little damage as long as the ball doesn't hit shoulder or ham.  I learned that doesn't work with larger calibers.  I did kill a fox squirrel with a .58 prb during a deer hunt.  I aimed for the neck not knowing what to expect.  There was only a small "slit" entrance and exit.  Talk about being surprised!  When gunning for small game, I'm a firm believer in using small calibers.  For shots occurring when one's loaded for deer, aim for the neck or head.

When I still had a 36 I used pure wheel weights and they seemed to take the critters with out too much or no damage at all when hit off the meat.

I had a .25 for awhile. Original owner ordered the 46" barrel from Rayle with a slow twist (like 1-70) and shot 5 grains of 4 f out of it. I bumped it up to 10 grains because the ball nearly covered the opening from the drum with 5 grains. It drilled a nice little hole through a squirrels head.  😜
